Who knew that the flower industry could possibly become affected by political decisions made throughout the world? Peter S. Goodman of The New York Times writes that Great Britain’s decision to leave the European Union could potentially wreak havoc on the floral trade not only in the country but across the entire continent as well!
Florist Market Flowers Flower Stall Bunch Bouquet
Located in Holland is one of the largest wholesale floral exchanges and auctions. Flowers are auctioned off and shipped across the world. A large portion of these flowers ends up in the United Kingdom. However, with Brexit ultimately happening next March, flowers that would normally have no issues clearing customs will have to be rigorously examined and meet new regulation guidelines in order to enter the country. This could potentially cause huge disturbances in the trade industry both in and out. The longer transit times will also be an issue. Flowers are a fragile and perishable product. The longer these products travel, the shorter the vase life of the flowers for the consumer will be.
The British may have to get flowers such as roses directly from the sources (growers) instead of going through these floral exchanges. This could certainly become a challenge. Or perhaps agreements can be made between the countries of the European Union and Great Britain to make this process a bit more seamless. Regardless, this separation will undoubtedly cause rifts in the trade and distribution of all items- floral or not.

Prevent Botrytis: A Silent Killer for Flowers
Botrytis is deemed as one of the most destructive elements associated with wholesale flowers. What is botrytis and why is it so harmful? It is bacteria that sharply reduces the vase life of many flowers. You might notice dark brown spots appear on petals or the softening of stems. These infections can lead to a loss in business and hard-ache for customers.
How can we help to reduce botrytis from endangering our wholesale flowers? Here at Main Wholesale Florist we want to help educate our customers on this topic. Follow these simple steps to help manage and reduce outbreaks:
Have the ability to identify botrytis
First, you must know the physical characteristics and signs that your flowers might have been infected. You will first see small dots or staining on its petals and leaves. If the stems look limp or the petals lose their vibrancy, your flowers might be affected. Be quick to notice botrytis and respond because once it hits, the illness will spread fast. Take extra care of botrytis-prone flowers such as delphinium and snapdragons
Inspect Flowers and clean work areas
As a retail florist, you will have a trained eye when it comes to selecting great flowers for your shop. Look over each stem carefully before hydrating your flowers and make sure the water is clean. Wash your hands as you can transmit botrytis by touch as well. The bacteria can hide in foliage. Remove any leaves that seem to be compromised. Be sure to keep your work spaces clean and sanitize all buckets thoroughly to minimize transmission.
Remove all plastic and other packaging
The presence of moisture and condensation creates a breeding ground for botrytis. When plastic sleeves are kept on bunches of flowers, air cannot flow and humidity begins to build creating the perfect environment for any bacteria to thrive.

Petal It Forward 2016
Last October, the Society of American Florists (SAF) held an inspiring event called Petal It Forward. Read about it here. This day was all about giving back and bringing happiness to others. How did they accomplish this? Volunteers handed out bouquets of flowers to unsuspecting strangers. They are then told to pay it forward and give away another bouquet to pass on the kindness. What a great way to show compassion and to spread joy!
This year SAF is throwing another Petal It Forward across the country on October 19th. Here at Main Wholesale Florist, we want to help you as the retail florist to get ready for this amazing event! Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- Plan your own local event. Talk to other shops and businesses about participating in the giveaway.
- Advertise the event on your social media accounts and website to reach customers. Post signage around and outside your shop to publicize the event. People will want to participate after viewing such content.
- Prepare beautiful and simple bouquets. You will have walk-in customers looking for small bouquets for this special day. Make sure to include cards with your business’ name so that recipients know where the flowers came from.
- Visit us at our New Jersey and New York locations to stock your shop with gorgeous wholesale flowers. Choose from our selection of high-quality and in season flowers. We are very happy to answer any questions and make suggestions in order to get ready for this event. We can also ship flowers directly to your retail location with our Flower Express Service.
