For the Love of Tulips: A History

For as long as there have been flowers, people have loved tulips! They are the perfect flower for any occasion or time of year. With a variety of colors and texture, it is no surprise these wholesale flowers are highly sought after. Where did this admiration come from and why can’t we get enough of this lovely bloom?

people have loved tulips

Where it all began

Bruce Wright from the Society of American Florists (SAF) states that in the early 1600s, Dutch merchants and explorers traveled from Turkey and further east bringing back loads of spices, tobacco, and even flower bulbs such as tulips. These bulbs, when planted in the Netherlands, flourished substantially.

Wright also comments that the Dutch were the first to create their own stock exchange. At a time of economic uncertainty, they began trading and selling tulip bulbs. They became a form of currency. People everywhere wanted to get in on this exciting venture. Their higher demand resulted in prices rising swiftly. They were a luxurious commodity, mostly enjoyed by the wealthy class.

Tulip Mania

Wright then states that “tulip mania” occurred in in 1637 when their price bounced negatively. Things started to turn toward the worst. As their value decreased so did their importance in society. While people still admired the flowers, that’s all they were. They were no longer treated as a currency.

Baby’s Breath: A Favorite Filler

What is Baby’s Breath?

Baby’s breath or also commonly called gypsophila is one of the most popular filler flowers for retail florists. These blooms have tiny white buds that are clustered on long lush stems. Gysophila represents undying love and romance making them a great selection for wedding design and Valentine’s Day.

Affectionately nicknamed Gyp, this filler can be paired with just about any bloom. Typically paired with roses and leather leaf fern, it is smart to keep this flower readily available in your retail shop.

Florists love baby’s breath mainly because of its versatility and long-lasting vase life. With many varieties and even some spray-tinted blooms, there are endless ways to incorporate baby’s breath into designs for your customers.

Trending?

Many thought that baby’s breath was on its way out. But recently they have been making a come back into our culture and design. You may find customers requesting it at a higher rate. Soon-to-be brides will bombard you with their Pinterest boards full of baby’s breath mason jar arrangements and table decor chock-full of these pretty petals.

Valentine’s Day Forecasts for 2019

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! In the floral industry, we prepare for this day all year long! Forecasts are in with estimations of how this holiday will weather. Here are the predictions:

This Valentine’s season should be a busy one! Sales should be on the higher end as the economy continues to strengthen.

day all year long

This year production was ahead of schedule at the beginning of the season due to warm weather and good conditions. Now as storms such as an El Nino and other poor weather conditions, production has slowed down a bit. But supply and availability of especially roses should be plentiful out of South America this February.

Retail florists are overjoyed that Valentine’s Day falls on a Thursday this year in 2019. Customers will have a few extra days for shopping. The extra days give shops the opportunity to allow for more foot traffic and potential sales.

day all year long

The only question that has arisen recently is if there are any residual effects from the recent government shutdown? Has any of the essential moving parts been affected? Most are predicting that the shutdown should have little or no consequence for Valentine’s Day sales but it is something to consider as many government workers were impacted. For example, the USDA was closed during this time. The wholesale floral industry relies on this agency to inspect flowers coming into this country from other nations. We really won’t know the outcome until February.
