Flower Spotlight: Carnations

For this month’s flower spotlight, we’d like to give credit where credit is due to an unsung hero of the floral industry, carnations. They get a bad rap and are always being passed over but we think they deserve better! We have a few reasons why we think Carnations deserve a comeback!

  1. Affordability. You can’t beat their affordability. There aren’t many other flowers that can boast such a wonderful price point. When making a larger centerpiece, carnations and their low price point can be very handy as a filler. Mini carnations also make a wonderful filler flower and at such an inexpensive cost.
  • Color. Besides roses, carnations offer one of the largest arrays of colors in the industry. The increasingly popular burgundy and peach carnations have become a staple in many shops giving an illusion of a small peony. Here at main we also offer moon carnations in stunning shades of purple. Everything from lavender to deep, dark, almost black. These come at a slightly higher price point but are still much more affordable than many of their counterparts.
  • Versatility. The carnation has long been used in many different styles of arrangements and events. We have seen it in its heyday being used in black-tie soirees along side roses, lisianthus and spray roses. It also lends itself to a rustic, wildflower feel in many of the shades it comes in. The burgundy, orange and yellow are perfect for a fall themed arrangement. White and red make a beautiful winter time bouquet. Spring and summer boast beautiful pinks, peach, lavender, and the soft green.

Carnations have so many wonderful qualities and personally we would love to see them get more recognition and use! With Valentine’s Day around the corner, we know they will getting lots of love!

For the Love of Tulips: A History

For as long as there have been flowers, people have loved tulips! They are the perfect flower for any occasion or time of year. With a variety of colors and texture, it is no surprise these wholesale flowers are highly sought after. Where did this admiration come from and why can’t we get enough of this lovely bloom?

Where it all began

Bruce Wright from the Society of American Florists (SAF) states that in the early 1600s, Dutch merchants and explorers traveled from Turkey and further east bringing back loads of spices, tobacco, and even flower bulbs such as tulips. These bulbs, when planted in the Netherlands, flourished substantially.

Wright also comments that the Dutch were the first to create their own stock exchange. At a time of economic uncertainty, they began trading and selling tulip bulbs. They became a form of currency. People everywhere wanted to get in on this exciting venture. Their higher demand resulted in prices rising swiftly. They were a luxurious commodity, mostly enjoyed by the wealthy class.

Tulip Mania

Wright then states that “tulip mania” occurred in in 1637 when their price bounced negatively. Things started to turn toward the worst. As their value decreased so did their importance in society. While people still admired the flowers, that’s all they were. They were no longer treated as a currency.

Brexit Could Wreak Havoc on Floral Trade

Who knew that the flower industry could possibly become affected by political decisions made throughout the world? Peter S. Goodman of The New York Times writes that Great Britain’s decision to leave the European Union could potentially wreak havoc on the floral trade not only in the country but across the entire continent as well!

Florist Market Flowers Flower Stall Bunch Bouquet

Located in Holland is one of the largest wholesale floral exchanges and auctions. Flowers are auctioned off and shipped across the world. A large portion of these flowers ends up in the United Kingdom. However, with Brexit ultimately happening next March, flowers that would normally have no issues clearing customs will have to be rigorously examined and meet new regulation guidelines in order to enter the country. This could potentially cause huge disturbances in the trade industry both in and out. The longer transit times will also be an issue. Flowers are a fragile and perishable product. The longer these products travel, the shorter the vase life of the flowers for the consumer will be.

The British may have to get flowers such as roses directly from the sources (growers) instead of going through these floral exchanges. This could certainly become a challenge. Or perhaps agreements can be made between the countries of the European Union and Great Britain to make this process a bit more seamless. Regardless, this separation will undoubtedly cause rifts in the trade and distribution of all items- floral or not.

Attention! Petal It Forward 2018

The folks at SAF (Society of American Florist) are at it again! Their annual nation-wide celebration of Petal It Forward will occur on October 24, 2018. We invite you to participate and spread the word as well!

This feel-good initiative strives to spread kindness and compassion to those in your community. Whether it be a friend or a complete stranger, do something special to make their day. Those who participate in Petal It Forward are asked to purchase two flower bouquets. Find an unsuspecting individual and give them the bouquets. Tell them to keep one bouquet and give the other to another person. Tell them about the initiative and perhaps they will continue the giving. The possibilities are endless! If you live in a large city like New York, you may see people passing out flowers on the street. If you don’t see anyone in your town participating, take it upon yourself and spread the love!

As a retail florist or someone that works in the industry, you can participate by stocking up on wholesale flowers to create these bouquets. In your shop create signage to advertise the event with the arrangements pleasingly displayed. You may even get some foot traffic with people specifically looking for ways to celebrate this day, so be prepared!

Do you have any questions? How can you join this special day? Here at Main Wholesale Florist, we are happy to help answer these questions! Join us at our New Jersey or New York location and speak directly to our experts. We can even ship flowers directly to your retail shop with our Flowers Express program. How will you be Petaling it Forward? Drop us a comment or talk to us on Facebook! We can’t wait to hear from all of you!
