For this month’s flower spotlight, we’d like to give credit
where credit is due to an unsung hero of the floral industry, carnations. They
get a bad rap and are always being passed over but we think they deserve
better! We have a few reasons why we think Carnations deserve a comeback!
Affordability. You can’t beat their
affordability. There aren’t many other flowers that can boast such a wonderful
price point. When making a larger centerpiece, carnations and their low price
point can be very handy as a filler. Mini carnations also make a wonderful
filler flower and at such an inexpensive cost.
Color. Besides roses, carnations offer one of
the largest arrays of colors in the industry. The increasingly popular burgundy
and peach carnations have become a staple in many shops giving an illusion of a
small peony. Here at main we also offer moon carnations in stunning shades of
purple. Everything from lavender to deep, dark, almost black. These come at a
slightly higher price point but are still much more affordable than many of
Versatility. The carnation has long been used in
many different styles of arrangements and events. We have seen it in its heyday
being used in black-tie soirees along side roses, lisianthus and spray roses.
It also lends itself to a rustic, wildflower feel in many of the shades it
comes in. The burgundy, orange and yellow are perfect for a fall themed
arrangement. White and red make a beautiful winter time bouquet. Spring and
summer boast beautiful pinks, peach, lavender, and the soft green.
Carnations have so many wonderful qualities and personally
we would love to see them get more recognition and use! With Valentine’s Day
around the corner, we know they will getting lots of love!
You own a retail floral shop and have just hired a handful of new employees. They have zero experience working with flowers. Where to begin? We love inviting newcomers into our exciting industry, so here is a helpful guide to train your new employees how to process your wholesale blooms:
Sanitize cooler buckets and the surrounding areas. Make sure that that floral coolers are disinfected. This will not only keep your workspace clean but also help the longevity of the flower’s vase life. Clean working area thoroughly before and after working. Great habits begin during training!
Process Fragile Flowers First
Begin processing fragile and water-sensitive flowers first. This may seem straightforward and common sense, but for a newbie to the industry, this is a helpful piece of advice. Allow those flowers that need the extra rehydration plenty of time to rest in cool and clean water.
Finish with Greenery
Also, make sure that your new employees know how to handle greenery. These items do need rehydration as well however, they tend to be much hardier than the delicate petals of flowers. This means that your new employees should learn to save processing greenery until last. Once each flower has been properly taken care of, you can then begin to work with the foliage you’ve received from your wholesaler.
Display Blooms and Arrangements Attractively
If your retail shop has a cooler that can be seen by your customers it is important to display your processed flowers and arrangements in a pleasing manner. Let your new employees know that they should not just throw items into the cooler haphazardly. Customers will be attracted and will potentially convince them to make a purchase when they see a beautifully organized cooler.
This seems simple enough! A crash course in proper processing is even helpful to veterans in the industry. It is always a good time to learn new things and catch up. Here at Main Wholesale Florist, we love to talk with our customers. What questions do you have? What tips do you have for training new employees? We can’t wait to hear from you!
We all know that Valentine’s Day is the busiest and most stressful time of year for wholesale florists and retailers. This holiday is the season where people want to express their love for others by giving gorgeous flowers. Here are some tips to help manage this crazy holiday:
1. Get orders in early:
Place your Valentine’s orders sooner than later. Here’s the scenario: everyone is looking for red flowers but all of a sudden red roses could become impossible to source. Wholesale florists know this problem all too well. Wholesale florists need to place their orders as far in advance as possible with their growers to ensure that there will be plenty of products in stock to satisfy the high demand. Retailers must also get their orders in with reasonable time to their wholesalers for the same exact reason. Sometimes the availability of red roses is out of the wholesale florist’s control and they will have to come up with other options to offer in its place. Have a backup plan!
2. Try to offer flowers other than the standard staples:
This seems like a no brainer as not everyone is looking for Red Freedom roses or carnations during Valentine’s. Many retail florists come to their wholesale florist looking for something unique to offer to their customers. Don’t just offer the standard red flower. Offer different varieties of flowers in pink, white, cream, lavender, and even burgundy. Many Valentine’s Day customers are searching for colorful and happy looking products to show people how much they love them.
3. The craziness only lasts for a short while:
Sure, this holiday can get busy and unpredictable. However, like most things, the stress will subside. Wholesale florists are here to make Valentine’s Day easier by offering high-quality products that anyone would love to display.
