The folks at SAF (Society of American Florist) are at it again! Their annual nation-wide celebration of Petal It Forward will occur on October 24, 2018. We invite you to participate and spread the word as well!

 

 

This feel-good initiative strives to spread kindness and compassion to those in your community. Whether it be a friend or a complete stranger, do something special to make their day. Those who participate in Petal It Forward are asked to purchase two flower bouquets. Find an unsuspecting individual and give them the bouquets. Tell them to keep one bouquet and give the other to another person. Tell them about the initiative and perhaps they will continue the giving. The possibilities are endless! If you live in a large city like New York, you may see people passing out flowers on the street. If you don’t see anyone in your town participating, take it upon yourself and spread the love!

As a retail florist or someone that works in the industry, you can participate by stocking up on wholesale flowers to create these bouquets. In your shop create signage to advertise the event with the arrangements pleasingly displayed. You may even get some foot traffic with people specifically looking for ways to celebrate this day, so be prepared!

Weathering The Foliage Storm

Lately, we have seen shortages of certain greens and foliage among the wholesale floral industry. Many florists are struggling to get ahold from their wholesaler some of their highest selling inventory such as silver dollar eucalyptus, coffee foliage, and so many more. Why is this happening and should we be concerned?

Hurricane season started full swing this June and many people are trying to get ahead of the game to avoid shortages for next year. This past year, with constant natural disaster hits, the foliage industry saw a 60 to 70 percent shortage. Many of these shortages included leather leaf, a staple among floral designers. The shade enclosures designed to protect the plants while growing were destroyed in these storms, which resulted in the loss of many crops. Many of these shade structures were old and could not withstand the powerful force of hurricanes. Many structures have since been rebuilt and new measures have been put into place to lessen the impact of future storms. High winds also uprooted many plants, destroyed the viability of young foliage, as well as break heavy branches.

As the industry is struggling to source foliage the price has gone up drastically as well. But experts project this increase to be only temporary. Prices should balance out as supply becomes more steadily available. In the meantime, there are many greens that are available and can be offered as comparable substitutions for arrangements.

Standard Markups

Markups enable you to make a return upon investment. For centerpieces set a 20% retail price for its labor, a two-times markup for their container and supplies used, and a 3.5% markup on flowers and foliage. This will help you to earn profit on the sale. For bouquets practice a similar strategy but charge a 35% markup for labor and supplies. When customers ask for a quote, you can use this standard markup to give a generalized price.

Labor Costs

Creating beautiful arrangements with wholesale flowers takes a lot of work, time, and energy. Make sure to charge appropriately for your labor. Labor costs don’t just involve arranging the flowers but also includes ordering supplies, delivery, set-up, and breakdown as well. Make this clear to your customers when working up quotes for weddings or other important events. If you do not charge for labor you may end up losing money in the long-run so pay extra attention to your pricing. Don’t forget to take account of your delivery charges if applicable. These can start at $1.10 per mile traveled.

Hire Designers with Experience

You can’t just hire anyone off the street. A floral designer must have an eye for symmetry, balance, color, and so much more. With that being said, you must pay fair wages as well. Take into account the price you charge, labor time, and hours worked when calculating wages.
