Goodman of The New York Times writes that Great Britain’s decision to leave the European Union could potentially wreak havoc on the floral trade not only in the country but across the entire continent as well!

Located in Holland is one of the largest wholesale floral exchanges and auctions. Flowers are auctioned off and shipped across the world. A large portion of these flowers ends up in the United Kingdom. However, with Brexit ultimately happening next March, flowers that would normally have no issues clearing customs will have to be rigorously examined and meet new regulation guidelines in order to enter the country. This could potentially cause huge disturbances in the trade industry both in and out. The longer transit times will also be an issue. Flowers are a fragile and perishable product. The longer these products travel, the shorter the vase life of the flowers for the consumer will be.
The British may have to get flowers such as roses directly from the sources (growers) instead of going through these floral exchanges. This could certainly become a challenge. Or perhaps agreements can be made between the countries of the European Union and Great Britain to make this process a bit more seamless. Regardless, this separation will undoubtedly cause rifts in the trade and distribution of all items- floral or not.

The folks at SAF (Society of American Florist) are at it again! Their annual nation-wide celebration of Petal It Forward will occur on October 24, 2018. We invite you to participate and spread the word as well!
This feel-good initiative strives to spread kindness and compassion to those in your community. Whether it be a friend or a complete stranger, do something special to make their day. Those who participate in Petal It Forward are asked to purchase two flower bouquets. Find an unsuspecting individual and give them the bouquets. Tell them to keep one bouquet and give the other to another person. Tell them about the initiative and perhaps they will continue the giving. The possibilities are endless! If you live in a large city like New York, you may see people passing out flowers on the street. If you don’t see anyone in your town participating, take it upon yourself and spread the love!

You may want to wear a sweater, it is going to get chilly in here! It is well known that keeping your wholesale blooms in cold temperatures allows them to last as long as possible. Why is this though and why does it matter?
On a scientific level, storing flowers at cool temperatures, roughly 30 to 36 degrees Fahrenheit, reduced the depletion of stored sugars within their foliage. It also helps reduce disease causing bacteria and protects flowers from ethylene, a gas produced by dying flowers. Keeping your floral cooler in working order should be on the top of your priority list when running a successful business. Be sure to routinely service your coolers to make sure they are running at their highest efficiency possible!
Some florists will keep their coolers at temperatures between 40 and 45 degrees Fahrenheit in effort to save money on energy costs. However, this may weaken the lifespan of your wholesale blooms. Another problem that you may not think about is displaying blooms outside of coolers. This may allow your customers to get close up views of your inventory and can convince those impulse buyers to purchase flowers, but overall, the warmer temperatures will age the flowers at a quicker rate. In fact, each day flowers are stored outside of your coolers, they will lose a day of life. If you desire to display blooms outside, perhaps leave some out and others in the cooler on rotation, switching every few hours.
