Who knew that the flower industry could possibly become affected by political decisions made throughout the world? Peter S. Goodman of The New York Times writes that Great Britain’s decision to leave the European Union could potentially wreak havoc on the floral trade not only in the country but across the entire continent as well!

Located in Holland is one of the largest wholesale floral exchanges and auctions. Flowers are auctioned off and shipped across the world. A large portion of these flowers ends up in the United Kingdom. However, with Brexit ultimately happening next March, flowers that would normally have no issues clearing customs will have to be rigorously examined and meet new regulation guidelines in order to enter the country. This could potentially cause huge disturbances in the trade industry both in and out. The longer transit times will also be an issue. Flowers are a fragile and perishable product. The longer these products travel, the shorter the vase life of the flowers for the consumer will be.
The British may have to get flowers such as roses directly from the sources (growers) instead of going through these floral exchanges. This could certainly become a challenge. Or perhaps agreements can be made between the countries of the European Union and Great Britain to make this process a bit more seamless. Regardless, this separation will undoubtedly cause rifts in the trade and distribution of all items- floral or not.

The folks at SAF (Society of American Florist) are at it again! Their annual nation-wide celebration of Petal It Forward will occur on October 24, 2018. We invite you to participate and spread the word as well!
This feel-good initiative strives to spread kindness and compassion to those in your community. Whether it be a friend or a complete stranger, do something special to make their day. Those who participate in Petal It Forward are asked to purchase two flower bouquets. Find an unsuspecting individual and give them the bouquets. Tell them to keep one bouquet and give the other to another person. Tell them about the initiative and perhaps they will continue the giving. The possibilities are endless! If you live in a large city like New York, you may see people passing out flowers on the street. If you don’t see anyone in your town participating, take it upon yourself and spread the love!
As a retail florist or someone that works in the industry, you can participate by stocking up on wholesale flowers to create these bouquets. In your shop create signage to advertise the event with the arrangements pleasingly displayed. You may even get some foot traffic with people specifically looking for ways to celebrate this day, so be prepared!
Do you have any questions? How can you join this special day? Here at Main Wholesale Florist, we are happy to help answer these questions! Join us at our New Jersey or New York location and speak directly to our experts. We can even ship flowers directly to your retail shop with our Flowers Express program. How will you be Petaling it Forward? Drop us a comment or talk to us on Facebook! We can’t wait to hear from all of you!
Lately, we have seen shortages of certain greens and foliage among the wholesale floral industry. Many florists are struggling to get ahold from their wholesaler some of their highest selling inventory such as silver dollar eucalyptus, coffee foliage, and so many more. Why is this happening and should we be concerned?
Hurricane season started full swing this June and many people are trying to get ahead of the game to avoid shortages for next year. This past year, with constant natural disaster hits, the foliage industry saw a 60 to 70 percent shortage. Many of these shortages included leather leaf, a staple among floral designers. The shade enclosures designed to protect the plants while growing were destroyed in these storms, which resulted in the loss of many crops. Many of these shade structures were old and could not withstand the powerful force of hurricanes. Many structures have since been rebuilt and new measures have been put into place to lessen the impact of future storms. High winds also uprooted many plants, destroyed the viability of young foliage, as well as break heavy branches.
As the industry is struggling to source foliage the price has gone up drastically as well. But experts project this increase to be only temporary. Prices should balance out as supply becomes more steadily available. In the meantime, there are many greens that are available and can be offered as comparable substitutions for arrangements.
Did your retail shop deal with any problems resulting in foliage shortages? Did this negatively affect your business or were you able to work around these challenges? We would love to hear from you! If you have any questions pertaining to fresh cut greens visit both our New Jersey and New York locations. You can also have flowers delivered directly to your retail location with our Flowers Express program. We can’t wait to see you!

We absolutely love lisianthus! These little beauties resemble a small soft rose and pairs nicely with almost anything. This wholesale flower is one of our favorites because of its versatility and uniqueness. Be sure to keep this flower in stock as it is a must have!
We absolutely love lisianthus!
They symbolize nature and appreciation. Of course there is no better way to show admiration for others with this flower! Not only does lisianthus have lovely blossoms that open quite wide but there are also buds that spray on a single stem. This provides for a very interesting look and adds depth to any floral arrangement. The arrays of color are sure to satisfy any customer. You will find them in white, pink, cream, purple, and even peach.
The longevity of wholesale lisianthus is impressive with having a vase life of 14 days from the day that they enter your retail shop! That is quite a long time and allows for your customers to enjoy them for many days. Keep this in mind and offer suggestions of comparable flowers that will last long and look great along with the lisianthus. Growers have perfected the ideal lisianthus. Their petals are thicker and can withstand harsher environments. This means that they ship very well. Also, they are less prone to succumbing to botrytis. As we all know, botrytis is another name for gray mold. When moisture is present, a breeding ground for botrytis occurs. It can be a death sentence to your flowers. Be careful because this stuff is airborne and can infect other flowers in your shop coolers.
We bet that you just can’t wait to get your hands on these sweet and precious blooms. Learn more about our Flower Express Service and you can get lisianthus shipped directly to your retail location. Be sure to get orders in soon for Mother’s Day and the Springtime season! Enjoy your wholesale lisianthus flowers!
