Brexit Could Wreak Havoc on Floral Trade

Who knew that the flower industry could possibly become affected by political decisions made throughout the world? Peter S. Goodman of The New York Times writes that Great Britain’s decision to leave the European Union could potentially wreak havoc on the floral trade not only in the country but across the entire continent as well!

Located in Holland is one of the largest wholesale floral exchanges and auctions. Flowers are auctioned off and shipped across the world. A large portion of these flowers ends up in the United Kingdom. However, with Brexit ultimately happening next March, flowers that would normally have no issues clearing customs will have to be rigorously examined and meet new regulation guidelines in order to enter the country. This could potentially cause huge disturbances in the trade industry both in and out. The longer transit times will also be an issue. Flowers are a fragile and perishable product. The longer these products travel, the shorter the vase life of the flowers for the consumer will be.

The British may have to get flowers such as roses directly from the sources (growers) instead of going through these floral exchanges. This could certainly become a challenge. Or perhaps agreements can be made between the countries of the European Union and Great Britain to make this process a bit more seamless. Regardless, this separation will undoubtedly cause rifts in the trade and distribution of all items- floral or not.

Attention! Petal It Forward 2018

The folks at SAF (Society of American Florist) are at it again! Their annual nation-wide celebration of Petal It Forward will occur on October 24, 2018. We invite you to participate and spread the word as well!

This feel-good initiative strives to spread kindness and compassion to those in your community. Whether it be a friend or a complete stranger, do something special to make their day. Those who participate in Petal It Forward are asked to purchase two flower bouquets. Find an unsuspecting individual and give them the bouquets. Tell them to keep one bouquet and give the other to another person. Tell them about the initiative and perhaps they will continue the giving. The possibilities are endless! If you live in a large city like New York, you may see people passing out flowers on the street. If you don’t see anyone in your town participating, take it upon yourself and spread the love!

As a retail florist or someone that works in the industry, you can participate by stocking up on wholesale flowers to create these bouquets. In your shop create signage to advertise the event with the arrangements pleasingly displayed. You may even get some foot traffic with people specifically looking for ways to celebrate this day, so be prepared!

Do you have any questions? How can you join this special day? Here at Main Wholesale Florist, we are happy to help answer these questions! Join us at our New Jersey or New York location and speak directly to our experts. We can even ship flowers directly to your retail shop with our Flowers Express program. How will you be Petaling it Forward? Drop us a comment or talk to us on Facebook! We can’t wait to hear from all of you!

Proper Floral Care for Retail Florists

Teach them the right way!

You own a retail floral shop and have just hired a handful of new employees. They have zero experience working with flowers. Where to begin? We love inviting newcomers into our exciting industry, so here is a helpful guide to train your new employees how to process your wholesale blooms:

Sanitize

Sanitize cooler buckets and the surrounding areas. Make sure that that floral coolers are disinfected. This will not only keep your workspace clean but also help the longevity of the flower’s vase life. Clean working area thoroughly before and after working. Great habits begin during training!

Process Fragile Flowers First

Begin processing fragile and water-sensitive flowers first. This may seem straightforward and common sense, but for a newbie to the industry, this is a helpful piece of advice. Allow those flowers that need the extra rehydration plenty of time to rest in cool and clean water.

Finish with Greenery

Also, make sure that your new employees know how to handle greenery. These items do need rehydration as well however, they tend to be much hardier than the delicate petals of flowers. This means that your new employees should learn to save processing greenery until last. Once each flower has been properly taken care of, you can then begin to work with the foliage you’ve received from your wholesaler.

Display Blooms and Arrangements Attractively

If your retail shop has a cooler that can be seen by your customers it is important to display your processed flowers and arrangements in a pleasing manner. Let your new employees know that they should not just throw items into the cooler haphazardly. Customers will be attracted and will potentially convince them to make a purchase when they see a beautifully organized cooler.

Business relationships are imperative

Also known as B2B (Business to Business),  this type of customer is special in that you have gotten to know them and their floral needs. Corporate clients can be some of the most loyal. They will reach out to your retail shop when looking for a way to enhance the look of their offices. Flowers have also proven to improve the moods of people which ultimately can increase the overall productivity of its employees.

Once you’ve developed a trusting rapport it is likely that your corporate clients will continue to use your services. This will become a steady part of your business. They may even set up weekly or bi-weekly orders with your shop! Your B2B recipient will enjoy the ease of fresh flowers delivered directly to their locations. However, do not take this for granted, as budgets and timelines can vary or change over time.

Overall, these customers like the personal touch. They like that you know them by name and that they can easily get in contact with you for any changes or new orders. Reach out often to see how they are enjoying your floral designs. Do they need additional product next week? Etc.

Just by being online means you have already set up stronger ways to communicate with both customers, growers, and your employees.
